Temple University, Philadelphia

Postby postoccupant » Sat Sep 03, 2016 9:26 am

Visualize Temple is the University’s campus master plan to guide the continued growth and evolution of Philadelphia’s leading public research university. It is the culmination of an eighteen-month long process driven by the input of over 3,000 Temple students, alumni, faculty and staff. Initiated by President Theobald, Visualize Temple identifies current challenges and opportunities at each campus and defines a collective vision for further campus transformation.

This is quite a spectacular building - reminding me in parts of the stunning library at James Cook University, Townsville, QLD. (James Birrell, 1968)

Cutaway corners... interior forms...

This image (part of the Temple slideshow) is utterly fascinating... it shows a pretty standard scene, familiar to most from Uni promotional material worldwide, normally posed.

Who are these people? In University promotional / prospectus images, sometimes actors are used, stock photos are common. Here, considerable care has been taken in selecting and styling the human actors. Now I am OK with the 'entourage' including trees, but in this instance, it includes people. Normally people are distant, in some renderings obscured/abstract (see my avatar.) Using realistic people as stand-ins for real people .... a double inflection. 'Look, we want you here' clashes with 'here is our ideal scenario.'

This is a reflexive re-run of Dan Graham's 'Performer/Audience/Mirror'...
